How do I add a link to an article in Blackboard?

Answer

To link to an article in Blackboard, first locate the article. (Contact a librarian if you need assistance. You can search for articles in HPU Discovery or in any of the databases on the A-Z Databases list.)

Once you have found the article, locate its permanent link (in some databases called permalink, stable URL, DOI link, etc.).

Then, follow the instruction on creating durable URLs:

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open a plain text editor (e.g. Notepad for Windows or TextEdit for Mac). Do not use a word processor such as MS Word, as it imports extra code when you paste from it.
  2. Copy and paste into your plain text editor your Permalink, Stable URL, DOI link, etc.
  3. If it is present in the URL, remove this text: .hpu.idm.oclc.org
  4. Paste in front of your URL this HPU proxy prefix: https://hpu.idm.oclc.org/login?url=

That's it! You now have a durable URL customized for HPU-only access.

Example from JSTOR

You find this article in JSTOR: "Race and Poverty in America: Public Misperceptions and the American News Media." Here are the steps to convert the URL to a durable URL.

  • Start with the stable URL: http://www.jstor.org.hpu.idm.oclc.org/stable/2749633
  • Remove the text shown in red (if present), including the period at the beginning: http://www.jstor.org.hpu.idm.oclc.org/stable/2749633
  • Now you have this link: http://www.jstor.org/stable/2749633
  • Add the proxy prefix: https://hpu.idm.oclc.org/login?url=

Here is your durable URL that will work whether you are on or off campus: https://hpu.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://www.jstor.org/stable/2749633

Finally, add the URL you created to the appropriate content area in Blackboard.
